Yemen 2020… A comprehensive file for all events of the Year

The following is a review of the most important events that occurred in Yemen during the year 2020.

The year 2020 recorded more of political, military, security, and economic events, within the course of the war on Yemen for the sixth consecutive year, however, the balance shifted this year in favor of Sana’a.

With simple evaluation for events and great exchanges occurred during this year, will notice two things:

The first, is the transition of Sanaa’s forces from the stage of defense to the attack, and achieving broad victories, turning the tables on the Saudi coalition, while Nihm front was a nightmare for Sana’a because any major penetration of Hadi’s forces and Islah party backed by coalition puts the capital under danger, and now  equation become inverse, as Sana’a was able to resolve it, clearing large areas, and they are now near to the walls of the government complex in Marib province, preparing to enter it.

The other matter, the year 2020 carried with it, the least crimes of Saudi coalition against civilians, compared to previous years, and this indicates to Riyadh’s fear from the Yemeni response, which the ballistic missile force has become its most prominent pillar.

During 2020, Sana’a accomplished more of security achievements, and thwarted many plots that aimed at destabilizing security, and stability, it even managed to defeat Corona virus, that still forms a terror for many countries of the world.

Yemeni Southern provinces under UAE and Saudi forces lived this year its worst period, the security loose forms an annoyance, where assassinations and burglary phenomenon on citizens markets raised, and the phenomenon of militias spread widened. At the same time the civil strife continue between the STC forces and Hadi forces till now, as observers said that Saudi and UAE continue to plunder the wealth of south, and setting up Zionist military bases in Socotra and the western coast, as well as, destroyed the economy where it raised the dollar exchange versus the Yemeni riyal , and the citizens living and services conditions deteriorated in all fields.

The prominent important events happened during the year 2020:

Through this rapid operation, Nihm District was completely cleared, which was forming a threat to the capital, Sana’a. While, Hadi and Islah forces, backed by Saudi coalition, were trying to cross into Sana’a and take control of it.

Thousands of coalition forces were killed, injured, and captured during Al-Bunyan Al-Marsous operation, as well as fully looted their equipment.

– shooting down Tornado plane in Al-Jawf province

In parallel with the successive defeats of Islah and Hadi forces, the Saudi-led coalition forces tried to rescue their fighters by launching hysterical raids on Nihm and Al-Jawf regions. However, Sana’a forces surprised the coalition by shooting down a Tornado plane with an advanced surface-to-air missile, in mid-February 2020, the pilot who was driving it was captured.

The spokesman of Sana’a forces, Brigadier General Yahya Sarie, said that the sky of Yemen is not for a picnic, and the enemy should calculate this a thousand times. While Mohamed Abdel Salam said that, the shooting down of a Tornado plane in the sky of Al-Jawf is a painful blow to the enemy, and a step that predicts a remarkable growth in the capabilities of Yemeni air defenses.

The coalition, through its spokesperson, Colonel Turki Al-Maliki, admitted that the plane had been shot down, and he said that it belonged to the Saudi Royal Air Force, and had fallen while it was carrying out a close air support mission to the Yemeni army units, according to his claim.

-launching the sixth year with biggest military operation

In light of this escalation, the coalition turned its fifth page, and inaugurated the sixth year without any signs looming on the horizon for peace or an end to the war.

On this occasion, the leader of Ansarallah movement, Abdul Malik Al-Houthi, delivered a speech on March 26, 2020, promising surprises that were not in coalition’s account, with advanced military capabilities and great victories, announcing his readiness to choose peace and stop the war, if the coalition takes a serious decision for that.

In addition to build human and economic confidence, and the resumption of political process, between Yemeni parties, to reach a comprehensive political solution in the country.

Despite Saudi Arabia’s declaration of a comprehensive ceasefire,

However, the raids on Yemeni cities and villages did not stop in a sign that Riyadh does not intend to stop the war.

  • Confrontations with Sheikh Al-Awadi in Al-Baidha

The political maneuver of Saudi coalition didn’t sucsseded, which came in light of the continued military progress of Sana’a forces towards the rich oil and gas-city of Marib, and opening a new front in Al-Baidha province, after instructed Sheikh Yasser Al-Awadi – one of the most prominent social figures in Al-Baidha and a loyalist to the former president Ali Abdullah Saleh – to move this front to relieve pressure on Marib, and occupy Sana’a forces in the provinces of Ibb and Dhamar.

Al-Awadi tried to move the tribes in those areas which  characterized by rugged terrain, under the pretext that Houthis are attacking women, and that came after clashes between security men, loyal to Sana’a and elements of Al-Qaeda, resulting in the killing of six security men and a woman from Al-Qaeda.

However, Al-Awadi used this incident, as a pretext to implement his plan and to bomb the situation militarily in those areas.

The leader of Ansar Allah Abd al-Malik Badr al-Din al-Houthi, sent many local mediations, to spare Al-Awadi’s areas from the war and not to slip into the fighting chaos, but Al-Awadi insisted on continuing to explode the war.

On 18th of June 2020, Sana’a managed to fully control Radman district, the stronghold of Yasser Al-Awadi, and quell this strife in a few days.

  • The fourth balanced deterrence operation

As Sana’a considers that everything happening in Yemen from conspiracies and treachery comes from the Saudi regime, so, on June 23, 2020, Sana’a targeted the Saudi depth with a number of ballistic missiles and drones, in an operation named the Fourth Balanced Deterrence Operation.

  • Defeating Al-Qaeda and ISIS from Al-Baidha

The battles then continued for weeks and months, after Al-Awadi’s cover was exposed, Al-Qaeda and ISIS organizations appeared in the photo, with the support of coalition, to fight the forces of Sana’a in Al-Baidha.

On the 18th of August 2020, Sana’a forces spokesperson, Brigadier General Yahya Sarie, announced the elimination on terrorist presence in Wald Rabi’ District, and its surroundings in Al-Baidha province, which was under the control of terrorist groups, by a large military operation for the Yemeni armed forces.

During a military statement, the spokesperson confirmed the death, injury and detaining more than 250 Takfiri militants, and the destruction of 12 camps and gatherings, during the military operation in Wald Rabi’, it also confirmed the liberation of 1,000 sq km

Seize large quantities of weapons, and found hundreds of belts and explosive devices.

Brigadier General Yahya Sarie, indicated that Saudi coalition supported ISIS and al-Qaeda organizations with dozens of raids, targeted Sana’a sites, in addition to support the two organizations with money and weapons, praising the prominent and supervising tribes role in the districts of Quraishya, and Wald Rabi’ and all free citizens in Al-Baidha province, in supporting Sana’a forces to clear their areas from ISIS and Al-Qaeda elements, despite the great support of Saudi-led coalition forces to the terrorists organizations.

  • Sana’a Defense minister threatens Saudi from its borders

In parallel with the completion of liberating Al-Baidha  province, from the Takfiri groups, ISIS and Al-Qaeda, Sana’a forces continued to liberate the remaining of Al-Jawf province, in northern east of Yemen, reaching the areas bordering Saudi Arabia.

The Defense minister in the province of Sana’a, Muhammad Nasser Al-Atifi, preferred to visit Al-Khanjar camp that close to the Saudi city of Najran, making threats to the Saudi regime that Yemen will move to the stage of great pain.

Defense minister said that after Yemen absorbed the first strike of coalition in 2015, her defense, which he described as passive, turned into a positive, moving defense stage, then it turned into the attack.

the defense minister said during his meeting with a number of Sana’a fighters in Al-Khanjar camp, in Khabb wa ash Sha’af axis in Al-Jawf province, which bordering Saudi Arabia, we are now in the fourth stage of the strategic balanced deterrence act.

Stressing that the more the coalition rises his arrogance and stubbornness, further committing more crimes against Yemeni civilians, whenever our options are many and our readiness is high to deter it.

  • Sana’a forces targeting Riyadh with ballistic missile

Weeks after the threats of Yemeni defense minister in Sana’a government, on September 10, 2020, Sana’a forces announced that they had bombed an important target in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, with a ballistic missile and drones.

Spokesperson Sarie said that a joint military operation was carried out between the Air and missile force, using a ballistic missile of Zulfiqar type and four Samad 3 drones, without revealing the nature of the important target that was targeted.

Sarie clarified that the targeting comes in response to the continuous escalation by the enemy and its continuous siege on our dear country.

The success of prisoner exchange deal

After a series of discussions held in Geneva between the national delegation in Sana’a, and the delegation of Hadi government under the supervision of United Nations lasted for a week, it was agreed to release 1086 prisoners from both sides. Among them are Saudi and Sudanese officers.

And in the midst of a wide and high-level public and official celebration, on Thursday and Friday, the 15th and 16th  of October 2020, the prisoner exchange deal was concluded, which lasted for two consecutive days, via flights between Sana’a, Abha, Seiyun and Aden airports.

According to the mechanism agreed upon under the auspices of the International Red Cross and the United Nations.

The deal was considered the largest in this humanitarian file since the war on Yemen began in 2015, but even in light of the positive atmosphere, the deal revealed many new scandals for the coalition and its collaborators, regarding their treatment with prisoners, as Sana’a announced the martyrdom of seven people from Sana’a forces, were included in the deal, after being tortured in coalition prisons, in addition many of the released prisoners exposed to torture and health neglect, it also revealed that the list of the other side prisoners, included dozens of al-Qaeda militants who insisted on their release, while the national list of Sana’a included people who had nothing to do with the fronts, were kidnapped by coalition and its mercenaries and put them among the prisoners, this confirms the enemy’s persistence in its elusion attempts, and confirms that its approval on this deal came as a result of its field retreat, which is also confirmed by Sana’a forces.

Four planes arrived on Thursday, at Sana’a airport, arriving from Seiyun and Abha airports. It carried 472 prisoners of forces (two planes from Saudi Arabia and two from Seiyun) on the other hand, three planes took off from Sana’a airport, one of which arrived in Saudi Arabia, carrying 14 prisoners of Saudi army and four Sudanese, and two planes carried 217 prisoners of Hadi forces to Seiyun airport.

Sana’a Airport received two additional aircraft from Aden Airport, carrying 201 freed prisoners of Sana’a forces, in exchange for two planes arrived in Aden with 150 prisoners of Hadi’s forces on board, so the deal was concluded.

-The arrival of Iranian ambassador to Sana’a

During the year 2020, Sanaa achieved a diplomatic victory, represented by the arrival of the ambassador of Islamic Republic of Iran to the capital, Sana’a, on Saturday 17th October 2020, in a move aimed at breaking the diplomatic isolation from Sana’a.

The pro-coalition and Hadi expressed their dissatisfaction and discontent at the entered way of the Iranian ambassador to Sana’a and how it was done, considering this a major breakthrough and a qualitative intelligence operation carried out by a brotherly country.

For its part, Hadi government condemned the arrival of the Iranian ambassador, Haji Hassan Erlo, to Sana’a, his appointment as extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of the Islamic Republic in Sana’a.

it said in a brief statement on Sunday evening, October 18, 2020:” We condemned in the strongest terms, the Iranian regime’s continued behavior as gangs and terrorist organizations, in smuggling weapons and individuals, to the Houthi coup militia, what confirms the aggressiveness of this regime, and his malicious intentions towards the Yemenis, ”according to the statement.

On the other hand, the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Sana’a government, Hisham Sharaf, confirmed on Sunday evening, October 18, 2020, that the arrival of the Iranian ambassador to Sana’a had nothing to do with regional conflicts, it is rather a declaration of Iranian solidarity with the Yemeni people who have been attacked for years, pointing out that the arrival of Iran’s ambassador to Sana’a is an explicit declaration that Yemen still exists and has friends in the world.

Meanwhile, the Southern Reconciliation and Tolerance Forum and a number of southern Yemeni forces and personalities welcomed the arrival of the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hassan Erlo, to Sana’a, to carry out his duties as ambassador to Yemen.

  • The assassination of Minister of Youth and Sports Hassan Zeid

In parallel with the preparations of Yemeni people to celebrate on the birth of the Prophet, in the capital, Sana’a, criminal elements assassinated the Minister of Youth and Sports in the National rescue Government, Hassan Zeid, in an attempt to confuse the scene and thwart the event.

The gunmen shot down the Minister Zaid on October 27, 2020, after he left his home in Hadda, on his way to the headquarters of his ministry on Al-Zubairi Street, the center of the capital, Sana’a, and his daughter was next to him in the car, but she survived from being killed, because Minister Zaid protected her from bullets when he embraced her, then bullets turned to his back.

Media means of Hadi’s government celebrated by that, and quickly broke the news, before it was transmitted through the media outlets of Sana’a government, which means that the operation was orchestrated by Saudi coalition.

The security services in Sana’a were able to arrest the killers within 24 hours, and they killed the main perpetrator of the crime during the raid.

-control Mas camp in Marib

With the escalation of the military operations, and the  advanced of Sana’a forces to the strategic city of Marib, the Yemeni armed forces announced on November 21, 2020, full control of the strategic Mas camp, near to the city of Marib, and hundreds of Hadi and coalition forces were killed and wounded.

Mas camp is the forward defence lines for Hadi, Islah, and the Saudi-led coalition.

Controlling Mas camp is a devastating blow to coalition, and opens the way for Sana’a forces, to advance towards the oil-rich city, and the last stronghold of the coalition in the northeast, whether from Al-Jada’an desert, or from the main line connecting the capital, Sana’a, to Marib.

The camp is located between the districts of Medghal and Majzar, in the western province of Marib and it is the last and most important forward defense lines of Marib city.

By the camp fall, Sanaa’s forces gain a wide margin to control what was left on the desert areas surrounding the city. Moving towards Al-Dashoush area, overlooking Sahn al-Jin and Tadawin camps, one of the main headquarters to coalition forces northwest of the city. And progress towards ministries and camps belonging to the coalition

as well as, towards oil and vital installations, in addition to control a large geographical area, in Al-Jada’an desert surrounding the city, and securing the advancing forces towards Marib from any treacherous attacks from behind,or any military detour of enemy forces.

The tightening control over the strategic Mas camp, and Al-Mas Valley and all regions, valleys and surrounding sites, it means the fall of the asphalt line, linking the capital with Marib, after Sana’a fully controlled Halhlan area and moved the battle beyond Al-kasarah point, in the direction of Marib, and it also meant not to retreat from liberating Marib and returning it to the national geography, and its liberation represented a severe blow, to the Saudi coalition in their efforts to threaten Sana’a.

-Jeddah oil facility operation

Sana’a forces shocked the Saudi regime, at dawn on Sunday, November 23, 2020, with a new qualitative blow, destroying one of the heart facilities in the Kingdom’s economy with a winged missile that was revealed for the first time.

The operation alone sent a very important message in terms of timing, it coincided with a secret meeting, that included the Prime Minister of the Zionist enemy, Benjamin Netanyahu, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman, inside the Kingdom, which quickly took the blow to the forefront to the regional scene, because it represented a direct blow, to the management of the Israeli-American project, at the height of its move to form a new scene in the region, what made the attack go beyond the limits of confronting the coalition, to carry within it, a comprehensive Arab Islamic response to these moves.

Brigadier General Yahya Sarie said that the operation was carried out by a missile belonging to the second generation of Quds winged missile system, which in itself represented a surprise, that the armed forces used to launch it in major operations, which is also a heavy

surprise, revealing the significant development in the path of Yemeni military industrialization, which continues upward without stopping; to make each new production more than a mere addition, to the military arsenal, but rather a qualitative leap that would directly entail a parallel shift in the deterrence path as a whole.

The operation targeted a distribution station, belonging to Aramco in the city of Jeddah, and thus it is a new blow directed to the heart of Saudi regime’s economy, at a time of an escalating economic crisis. Because of the failure effects accumulation and the repercussions of Yemeni deterrence operations, with the drop of oil prices, which makes the impact of this strike, parallel to the effect of larger strikes, directed at the Kingdom’s economic facilities, in better conditions than these.

The strike carried several political and military messages, as it confirmed the credibility of the armed forces threat days ago with a new escalation, in response to the   coalition and siege continuation, to make this threat more clear, in talking about a practical direction, towards a new stage of deterrence, that the enemy knows it will come within the ascending path, and thus it will be more severe than the previous stages.

The continuation war in Yemen … no solutions in sight

The year 2020 has reached the end and the military confrontations and the aerial bombardment of the coalition aircraft continue in Yemen’s airspace.

Saudi Arabia and its coalition in the Yemeni field did not achieve any significant military achievement. It only excelled in massacres and destruction – as many say, and in return, Sana’a achieved broad victories, turning the tables on the coalition. In light of the political horizon blocking and the suspension of negotiations sponsored by United Nations.
