The southern transitional council (STC)’s forces sent on Wednesday huge military reinforcements to fighting fronts with forces of the internationally recognized government in Abyan province.
eyewitnesses said that the reinforcements included Saudi and UAE armored vehicles and they sent them when the clashes renewed with Islah party’s militiamen in Taria and Wadi Sala fronts.
Several military vehicles belonging to Islah militants were seen withdrawing from Taria front, without knowing the reasons, the eyewitnesses added.
Clashes renewed on Tuesday between forces of the Yemeni government and troops from the Southern Transitional Council (STC) in the country’s southern province of Abyan.
“Armed confrontations erupted again between the STC’s military units and the government forces in the areas east of Zinjibar, capital of Abyan Province,” said the security source on condition of anonymity.
Various types of weapons including artillery shells were used during the armed confrontations between the two warring rivals, the source noted.
“The government forces targeted the sites of the STC’s military units which immediately fought back, sparking intense clashes in the area,” he said.
The renewed confrontations are threatening to collapse the mechanisms proposed by Saudi Arabia last month to accelerate the implementation of the Riyadh power-sharing agreement signed between the two Yemeni warring rivals in November last year.
The new mechanisms include maintaining the cease-fire and de-escalation between the government and the STC, which came into effect on July 22.
Last year, Saudi Arabia persuaded the STC and the Yemeni government to hold reconciliation talks, which succeeded in reaching a deal to form a new technocrat cabinet of no more than 24 ministers.
