UN Reduce Food Aid to Yemen
The United Nations has announced that it will soon reduce the amount of food aid provided to 11 million Yemenis due to lack of funding.
A statement issued by UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Yemen stated on a social media account, that funding shortfalls threaten to cut off support that has saved millions of lives in Yemen.
Soon, 11 million people will be forced to rely on a limited ration of food; 4.6 million people may not have access to clean water.”
Millions more stand to lose access to other vital services, including essential healthcare, nutrition, shelter, cash assistance and education.
The statement indicated that the aid is expected to be further reduced, if financial support is not provided urgently, detailed information on this topic is not provided.
The United Nations WFP had announced in December 2021 that food support for eight million Yemenis would be reduced from January due to lack of funding; pointing out that full food support will continue for five million Yemenis, they are on the verge of declining to the level of starvation.
According to the United Nations, Yemen is experiencing the worst humanitarian crisis in the world due to the war of the Saudi-Emirati coalition.
In a statement, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA ) said that, “Funding shortages are threatening to cut lifesaving assistance for millions of vulnerable people across Yemen”.
As of January, almost two-thirds of major UN aid programmes had already been reduced or closed due to funding gaps. Further cuts are expected in the coming months unless additional support is urgently received, the OCHA added.
The OCHA concluded its statement by saying that “urgent funding is essential to maintain the humanitarian operation and avoid a sudden surge in people’s suffering.”
