Swedish Diplomat Hans Grundberg Appointed as UN Special Envoy to Yemen
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed on Friday Swedish diplomat Hans Grundberg as his Special Envoy to Yemen.
Mr. Grundberg succeeds Martin Griffiths of the United Kingdom who has been appointed to the post of Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.
Mr. Grunberg, who has been the European Union’s Ambassador to Yemen since 2019, brings with him 20 years of experience in international relations, including more than 15 in conflict resolution, negotiation and mediation, with a focus on the Middle East, said a statement from the UN spokesperson.
He was previously Head of the Gulf Division at the Swedish Foreign Ministry in Stockholm, during which time his country hosted the United Nations-facilitated negotiations that resulted in the Stockholm Agreement in 2018.
Mr. Grundberg is a career diplomat who has worked abroad for his country and the European Union. He holds a master’s degree in economics from the Stockholm School of Economics.
